Do I believe in God?
Obviously that's a very complicated question but here is my interpretation of how God works.
I refer to God with male terms and pronouns for consistency and simplicity. I do not know God's gender, and I do not even know if gender is a thing for him or just something he made up to torture us.
In the simplest of terms, I believe that our reality is a universe that is a fictional work of God. God exists within a higher reality (think "more real than real") and he has written everything that has ever happened, is happening, and will happen. Please do not conflate this with me believing that fiction is reality. Of course, Sonichu isn't real (hopefully) and you can not dap up Superman. I simply think that God is to us like an author is to their own work of fiction.
That being said, this means that truly nobody has any agency over anything. Any free will you have is a facsimile of it written into you by God. Everything that God has written has happened, is happening, and will happen for a reason. For what reason? Truly, we may never know, but under the idea that reality is a story, it must be for narrative quality and cohesion.
I believe that God does not care for right and wrong. If the God we speak of was truly an all-knowing and all-loving entity, then he would not have let all of the atrocities committed both by nature and by humans happen. No, I believe God only cares about what is interesting to him. If reality is a story, then it would have to have conflict for it to be a true story. Of course, it is an uncomfortable belief to have, but so are many of the common religious beliefs that humans follow.
What does that make of science and the proof we have of the foundations of reality?
Obviously, it's still real. Evolution, dinosaurs, atoms, and quantum physics are all real, but they are there for worldbuilding. It's like when an author has to explain in detail how their "magic system" works. Science provides the Watsonian explanation for everything, while the Doylist explanation is simply because of God's whims.
Do I believe in any of the events of the Bible/the Quran/the Torah/etc?
Were I a complete atheist I would say no, but under the idea that reality is a story, the answer becomes more tricky. Perhaps these books are previous drafts of reality that God has written us to worship. If so, that would either make God very egotistical, or he would be subverting this idea by having written the violent history of the world's major religions as a commentary of what a belief could inspire.
Do my beliefs affect my day-to-day life?
No. I rarely bring up my beliefs to anyone, and the most that I would do with my beliefs are blame God for all of the world's problems. Whether you think that is healthy or not is up to you. The idea that God lives in a reality separate from ours means that he cannot affect my life unless he has written it so. That basically means I never have to actively think about God and he can just be an interpretation of an explanation for why things are the way they are. Ironically, this means I have God on the mind less than the average religious person, despite me having a pretty out-there belief.
